Doc
Martin
Friend, brother, partner, ex-flatmate... I gotta say "I
love this guy" if you listen to him spin, you'll say
it too!
This is a mix compilation from 1998 > House
Music Movement
Another mix compilation from 2002 > Sounds
You Can Feel
Laj
& Quakerman
I met Laj through his girlfriend. Turns out I was staying
at his flat in London. He gave me this CD the summer after
it came out and I've loved it ever since. It's so upbeat and
always sure to cheer me on the grayest days. I've heard their
sound referred to as the Nu-house sound of London, but to
me I think they're just holding the light for all the disco
masters no longer with us. While it's not as orchestrally
lush as that full on disco sound, Laj & Quakerman incorporate
live musicians for a layered, textured feeling that is contemporary,
yet true to the original.
Fat Cow is an actual album, not a mixed CD; released 7 Dec
1999 and it's not available online anymore.
They have a track included on a mix compilation put together
by DJ John Aquaviva called Skills. The Laj & Quakerman
track is "Restoration" >BUY IT
The Idjuit Boys
I first met these guys in the early 90s when they came to
San Francisco on a visit with my pal DJ Thomas who lived here
at the time. I hit it off with these guys straight away, united
by the deep, funky soul-tinged house that San Francisco is
best known for. The Idjuits are still keeping it alive, putting
together these great mixed CDs:
From Feb 2000: U-Star Daze >Sorry this is no longer
available online.
From 21 March 2000: Saturday Nite Live. This CD contains
selections from such diverse contributors (including Francois
K!) that it creates a funky flow of Paradise Garage flavoured
loveliness. >Sorry this is no longer available online.
Their work is included on a mix compilation called Carte Blanche
Penny
Dredfuls
Way back in high school, I used to have a crush on a girl
(hey I was young and confused!). Her name is Melanie Malkaiwi.
We fooled around for a while. I could say we dated, but she
didn't live in my area-code. I did see her several times a
week as we always met up at the nightclubs. She used to bring
about 10 friends to come down to Orange County to hear me
DJ (Jagg Ruled!) or just to hang out. They all lived in the
South Bay section of L.A. and her high school was used later
to film all of the exterior shots for a TV show called "Beverly
Hills 90210". After high school, I moved up north and
she formed a band with our pal Andrea. The band was called
Penny Dreadfuls. They were a guitar heavy rock band. Mel and
I kept in touch and when the band toured, I got to hang out
with them a bit. They put out two albums before breaking up.
Their self titled album: Penny Dreadfuls is no longer available
online.
Hole
Melanie's been hanging out with a band called Hole. My pal
Brian was really into them when their debut album came out,
but I wasn't feelin' it for such agro tunes at the time. When
Melanie hooked up with them, I gave them a listen. I was shocked
to discover that Courtney Love is in the band too. I didn't
realize she was famous for anything other than being a drug-addicted
widow. I guess their music is a bit like the Penny Dredfuls,
so if you like the PD sound check out Hole.
Their newest album: Pretty on the Inside
DJ Beej
I first met Beej at a club called Odyssey in the early 1980s.
I would see him at other clubs and then he started working
at a club called Jagg in lovely Lake Forrest California. I
mention this only because Beej is the one who put in a good
word for me and got me my first 'real' DJ gig. Before that,
I was DJing at our school. The administration thought they
were setting up the equipment so the students could have music
on the patios at lunch time. In reality, a few of us had set
up a low watt transmitter on one of the nearby hills and set
up a pirate radio station... it impressed Beej enough to get
me the gig. We both got sidetracked from DJing by club promotions,
he was a bit more successful at it than me (I had too much
"fun" back then) and computers (He's a programmer
during the day I think) Anyway, this is his first mix CD compilation
it's kinda spacey with a trance vibe goin' on. It's called:Rubber
Lexi
Love
Both of my flatmates in London were making music. Lexi put
out an album, I don't know who is distributing it in the U.S.,
but I've not been able to find it. I did manage to find this
compilation with one of his tracks on it though, the CD is
called Y3K, The future sound of music. I'm sure they'll regret
that title when these songs are passe in a couple of years,
but for now most of the tracks sound cutting edge and experimental.
Lexi's track is called, "I see you" and you can

DJ
Garth
Garth and I used to work together organizing and promoting
events for the Wicked Sound System. We did the first 50 Full
Moon Massives at various locations around the Bay Area. In
that whole time, he built a reputation for trippy, acidic
yet funky prog-house which makes the lounge oriented, jazzy
tracks like "summer" and "Running towards a
Dream" a little surprising. If you didn't hear him DJ
through most of the 1990s, you'll enjoy this CD of original
material on its own merits. If you are familiar with his earlier
DJ sets, you'll appreciate the musical maturity and depth
exhibited in this album. San Francisco Sessions, Vol. 3is a real album, NOT a mix compilation>
