School
We got our mid-term grades this week. I'm getting a solid
"B" which I suppose is great for a subject as difficult
as Physics, but in looking at the grade book I realized I
got top marks on everything except for two of our tests and
even then I got second best in the class. I keep telling myself
that things are easier now that we've got most of the esoteric
stuff out of the way. We're dealing with forces that are a
lot more relevant and experiencal like buoyancy so I hope
to show more improvement going forward.

A
Rainy Night Dinner
This week, before the war escalated to outright conflict,
I had a wonderful dinner with Andie, her husband and son.
Our first choice for the venue turned out to be a place that
closes at three on Wednesdays for some reason. We had to grab
a cab and head up the hill, but once we got settled into the
restuarant, the fun really began...

Stop the City, Stop the War
SF went crazy all day there were thousands of protesters
spread out all over the city. No single group was larger than
about 5 or 6 thousand people, but there were at least three
or four hot-spots of activity at any one time all over the
city. I've never seen so many police and helicopters. It was
the largest anti-war action so far and certainly the most
confusing for the cops. Their sirens were blaring almost non-stop
all day. Because I live close to the financial district and
the Bay Bridge, My neighbourhood was chock-a-block with craziness.
My building lost power for about two hours, luckily I wasn't
on the computer at the time... then around 5:30 thousands
of protesters tried to block access to the Bay Bridge about
two streets up from my building. I had to close my windows
when the clouds of tear gas wafted this way.
Police say most of the protesters are peaceful, yet they
arrested over 2,000 people in the first 12 hours.
The local news has never given so much voice to the opposition.
Maybe if they let people express their anti-war views months
ago, people wouldn't be killed. The mayor made a statement
that the protests were just frustrating and alienating support
in a city that is naturally supportive of the anti-war sentiment.
The inference in his comments was the protesters should conduct
their activities out of his jurisdiction where people hate
them anyway. I've always disliked the mayor, but his comments
about the protesters really proved how out of touch he is
with the majority of his constituents, especially the ones
in the street.

Drums
of War
Unquestioning obedience is hailed as a great virtue only
by those leaders whose commands are highly questionable. Bush
gave an 'ultimatum' and pissed
off a lot of people that we need on our side in the war
on terrorism. Even real
patriots don't understand why Bush is so hell-bent on
war.
This week, the UN withdrew the weapons inspectors as the
US, UK, and Spain didn't have enough support for a security
council resolution authorizing Bush's war, but announced they're
going to have a war without one.
Good International News: Four more British politicians, became
the most recent in a parade of career politicians and diplomats
to stand down as a matter of conscious. Looks like PM Blair
is going to have a lot of 'splaining to do when he can't distract
with Iraq.
