Doc Martin's Birthday

While I was invited to his birthday party in Los Angeles, I couldn't make it down there. I've got to be responsible with my savings while I'm jobless even though I could desparately use a city-break.

Week Ending 23 February

This was a tragic week for clubbers everywhere after two nightclub incidents drew national attention.

A security guard in Chicago used mace to break up a fight between two girls on a crowded dancefloor. The lack of ventilation meant that the people surrounding the girls were maced as well and it caused a stampede as they tried to escape the burning spray.

The second incident took place in Rhode Island at a rock show. The major media isn't savvy enough to make a clear distinction between a nightclub and a rock venue, so they've lumped it all together. Basically the band's pyrotechnics burned down the building and hundreds were killed by the fire or the rush to the doors.

These types of things always mean more scrutiny of late-night activity and while creating a safe space is always a good thing, I worry that new regulation will help quicken the trend towards a sanitized and homogenous youth culture.

Like Rocket Science type stuffWorkin' It

This week I worked on the web site, worked on some music... did I work on finding work? Barely. I applied to two jobs in a perfunctory effort, though I've really been catching up on my 'jobless to-do' list. I'm giving myself til mid-March to wrap up these creative projects and then I'll really buckle down and concentrate on finding full-time work to bankroll still more projects, at least until they start paying higher dividends for my efforts.

SchoolSchool

I didn't have class this week due to the President's Day holiday... did I use the extra time to prepare my two-page report? Did I re-read some of the material that I just skimmed over previously? You're right if you answered "NO" And really, the only thing I've learned so far in the class is how much I hate rhetorical questions. How's that for an education? Bah.

construction coneThe Guru

When I saw the adverts for this film, I thought it would be a cute film. It's actually one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in ages. I thought it might be set in London or India, but was pleasantly surprised to find it takes place in NYC. It's a smart and funny script that pokes fun at itself and in it's subjects in a lighthearted way. Beyond all of the cross-cultural silliness, the core of the film examines what happens when the characters start realizing their long-held dreams and find that they've been replaced with other, more satisfying ones.

I highly recommend this film. The soundtrack is great too.

Peace IS PatrioticDrums of War

This week, Bush acted like a broken record with his whinging for war.

How sad that France, and Germany are the sole defenders of democracy and freedom on the planet right now. The level of debate on this issue in America has now denigrated to "we saved France's ass 50 years ago so they should go along with us and do whatever we want them to". Has the American educational system declined THAT much? Sad to say, YES IT HAS!

Why did the White House object to the interview with President Saddam Hussein by Dan Rather, seek to interject rebuttal and rebuke at different points in the interview, and then complain that a person who lies should not be allowed to speak in the media?

Because I believe in individual freedom and that the truth can set us free, I will never accept the command "thou shalt not" reason together.

At this moment, U.S. anger over meetings with Saddam Hussein reflects Bush administration fears that opposition voices might begin to ask, "Who are the real aggressors, the greater threats to peace, the most dangerous terrorists?" Once a person is able to hear all sides and is informed, the answers cannot be controlled by government propaganda.

During the barely two years of his presidency, George W. Bush has revealed an unprecedented, uncompromising obsession for war that threatens peace and economic stability around the world.
