Workin'
It
This week I parted ways with The Sharper Image. They were
hyper stoked with my project and the Director of HR offered
to be a job reference for me. She also said they would keep
me in mind if / when something appropriate opens up at TSI.
In the six months I've been there however, they've only hired
extremely entry-level people and extremely high-level director
types, so I'm not really holding my breath on that one. I've
got skills and I'm not hung up on staying in the Bay Area,
so I'm not too worried about being jobless again. I'm even
looking forward to a little "me-time" coz I've not
had a proper holiday for well over a year and I had to work
through Christmas and New Year, so I deserve a bit of a break
now.

School
My physics class got a little more exciting this week with
some visual aids. The instructor had a flashy demonstration
of friction, by pulling a table cloth slowly and then quickly
from a table laden with a full place setting of plate, cup
and saucer, fork and spoon... wow, yawn, hooray.

Wacko Jacko on Tellie
It was shocking, gripping and a bit grotesque (well, the
face part anyway). Michael Jackson was on tellie this week,
first in England and then in the US. Granada Television produced
a documentary about him with presenter, Martin Bashir. Some
of you might remember him from his Princess Dianna interview
that was shocking, gripping and a bit grotesque (well, the
sex parts anyway).
Notice a pattern here? Bashir has made a career of supposedly
representing Middle England values and trying to impose them
on world figures who lead larger than life lives. The "normal"
rules don't apply when you're constantly hounded by paparazzi,
fans, well wishers, minders and media.
The most offensive part of the whole debacle originated not
from Michael as Bashir and the editors would like, but more
from their heavy handed tactics to paint him with malice.
Anyone who knows a tranny will tell you that if a person
asks you to call her 'Cindy' and bathes herself in feminine
accoutrements like dresses, sling-back espadrilles and make-up;
then she's a she no matter how muscular, hairy or masculine
she may also appear. Identity is an inside-out experience,
but the small minded, conservatives can't deal with it so
they invert it. They try to impose their moralistic vision
of identity on one and all... but one size never fits all
no matter how hard we try.
Bashir was so hung up on the fact that a 44 year-old 'man'
would want to climb trees, own a fun fair of rides and a zoo.
It was almost pathetic that he just didn't get it. Michael
said he identifies as a child, displays childish accoutrements,
and idolizes Peter Pan. What more does he have to do to prove
it? With the male-female thing, a tranny can get the snip,
loose his candy and the world calls him a woman... the Peter
Pan thing is harder to achieve. At least he's tried to transform
himself into a Disney-fied version of Peter Pan. I don't see
what the big deal is.
The bright side to all the faux controvesy is the 6-fold
surge in record sales following the broadcast. The extra cash
should help MJ recoup some of the losses on his most recent
album sales.

Drums
of War
This week, Powel gave an address to the UN Security Council.
He has no new evidence for war, except to say that Sadam sucks.
It's been interesting to see how rabid war-mongers believe
the trollop extolled by the Bushites, no matter how immaterial
and claim it's irrefutable. I was so glad to see some European
countries start to refute the 'evidence' presented.
How sad to discover that France, and Germany are the sole
defenders of democracy and freedom on the planet right now.
If I really lived in a democracy, the President would be the
winner of fair and democratic elections and he or she wouldn't
have to 'sell' a war because "Saddam tried to kill my
daddy" as Bush so eloquently stated last year.
