For the week ending November 3rd

The theme this week was election fever.

America is still open for business and so are we!

Workin' It

I started this week doing a two-day temp assignment at The Sharper Image corporate office. This time, I was working in the Retail Department assembling training materials for the ramp-up in holiday staff.

Still Sharp

My strong work ethic has at least endeared me to the HR department at The Sharper Image. I got to interview with two new departments this week. Both need additional help for the busy holiday season. While I'd rather have something more permanent (read =With Benefits) I'm just doing the best I can in the current job market, so I've accepted another temporary fixed-term contract with The Sharper Image. This time, I'll be working in their Payroll Department.

No Games

I didn't go to Australia this week. I had to cancel my trip in July. I was kinda bummed about it for a millisecond this week, but I know I'm better off in the long run by not going.

No Games Again

San Francisco lost out to NYC in the bid for the American city shortlisted to host the 2012 Straight Olympics. The last SF bid was usurped by Atlanta, who went on to win the chance to host a Straight Olympics, so maybe it'll be a trend and NYC will beat out Rio, Moscow and Paris.

Another Tragic Loss

Jam Master Jay, a founding member of the pioneering rap trio Run DMC, was shot and killed at his recording studio near the New York neighborhood where he grew up.

The 37-year-old disc jockey, whose real name was Jason Mizell, was shot once in the head in the studio's lounge and died at the scene.

Run DMC was the first black rap group allowed to perform on MTV and Jam Master Jay invented their innovative sound.

No Real Choice

While the Y2K Presidential election proved that our votes don't count... we still have to pretend that we live in a fair and democratic country.

The primary elections earlier this year had about a 17% turn-out so instead of instigating election reform, both of the major political parties have done everything they can to remain deeply entrenched in positions of power. Even though they've basically merged somewhere in the 90s I think its important to show up and vote just to provide balance from the right-wing, reactionary segment of the electorate.

If you'd like to vote in California, here's a great site to help you make an informed decision. I particularly enjoyed their "Follow the Money" section that shows which groups are funding ballot initiatives in the Republic of California.

Drums of War

Don't worry about the world coming to an end today because it's already tomorrow in Australia.

Marching

Wow! Even the NYTimes couldn't ignore the grassroots efforts to stem the march to war. It was so encouraging to see they've finally admitted ignoring the truth about government policy when they under-reported the number of protesters by about 100,000 people. Obviously the peace movement is gaining momentum and its great!

If you care

You can still contact your congress person and voice your opposition to military action and the slow erosion of basic civil rights. If you live in the Bay Area, they are:

Barbara Boxer

Diane Finestein

Nancy Pelosi

Urgent Apparel Appeal Update

I'm calling on everyone reading this to contact Eddie Bauer and get them to reestablish their fair pricing policy. For more info about what you can do to reverse their greedy, mean-spirited attack on tall people, click HERE.
