Week Ending 3 February 2002 It's black history month again, why is it the shortest month of the year? Celebrating Nonviolence in a time of war January 30, 1998 marked the 50th anniversary of Mohandis K. Gandhi's assassination. In memorial, a 64-day, grassroots movement honoring nonviolence and reverence for life was established with an interfaith celebration broadcast around the world by satellite from the United Nations in New York. An ongoing series of events took place across the country to raise the awareness of the principles and practices of nonviolence. The international event culminated on the anniversary date of Martin Luther King, Jr's death (April 4th), honoring the vision of two great world leaders for a nonviolent world empowered by the spirit of love. This year, the season for nonviolence takes on an especially poignant resonance under the shadow of Bush's oil wars. The days connecting the two memorials will be dedicated to consciously embracing the dignity and inherent worth of every human being with activities that demonstrate courage and compassion as a means to heal, transform and uplift our lives and our communities. |

Winter's Grip Begins to Thaw I went to the gym for the first time since last September. I just couldn't muster the motivation with everything that happened in September, and the change in the schedule at the day job. Then the whole end of daylight savings time thing really knocked me off my regular routine... but now I'm back! I told my pal Mike I hadn't been to the gym for too long and he said, "You're coming with me tomorrow!" I probably could have said no, but I thought it was really nice of him to offer... little did I realize he would be at my door at a quarter after 6 the next morning. We went to the YMCA in the Presidio. It was crowded with equipment and busy with lots of type "A" personalities getting a start on their days. The Presidio is being stolen from the public by Lucas Films and other corporate interests in an effort to make the Golden Gate National Park more "self sufficient". I'm glad I got a chance to enjoy the area before they build their office complexes. |

The Netherlands was awash in a sea of orange as Crown Prince Willem-Alexander wed an Argentine economist whose father's military junta past revived a tradition of controversial Dutch royal matches. The couple were wed in a civil ceremony in front of about 600 honoured guests, then they received Protestant and Catholic blessings at Amsterdam's 600-year-old Nieuwe Kerk (New Church). The church's bells were made famous for their supporting roll in "The Diary of Anne Frank" |

Last summer two friends and I started a group for really tall guys and we meet about once a month. I'm the Webmaster and the San Francisco coordinator for the group. We had our first event of 2002 in San Francisco and it was pretty mellow. It's been really different every time and after six months, a core group has yet to form. I think we'll start to really do fun stuff when it gets warm again in the spring... |
