Why try to be a dotcom now?
Things have never looked better for Corporate America. The
corporate controlled media made sure the business friendly
candidate won by ignoring his hipocracy, fuzzy logic, criminal
history and oratory gaffs.
Early
generations of Americans, according to author and activist
Richard Grossman, "were quite clear that a corporation
was an artificial, subordinate entity with no inherent rights
of its own, and that incorporation was a privilege bestowed
by a sovereign people." Until the late 1800's, in many
states, corporations were prohibited from owning other corporations,
prohibited from donating to political candidates or charitable
organizations, and prohibited from owning any land beyond
what was necessary to carry out their chartered duties. Boards
of directors and stock holders were held personally liable
for all harms and debts, the "limited liability corporation"
as we know it today, did not exist.
During the 20th century, fictitious corporate "citizens"
have usurped the authority to make critical societal decisions
that affect the natural world. I think this trend will continue
until catastrophe or ecological destruction forces people
to re-evaluate things... and until they do, I want to milk
it for all it's worth!
Isn't
the whole 'New Economy' thing a bit played out?
No actually, I think the stock market's whole New Economy
"Bubble" actually demonstrates perfectly the elastic
nature of reality and how powerful our belief systems can
be. When people say an idea has value, it does. The only basis
in 'reality' for exuberant market caps is the fact that reality
is what we all get together and decide it is. If you ask anybody
on the street what days of the year are the longest, the majority
of (American) people will say summer, but actually the days
get shorter all summer long. People got together and manipulated
the way we capture time and in doing so, they convince everyone
else to perceive things opposite from the way they are in
the physical world. I think our ideas around prosperity have
been working the same way. I believe we are at the end of
what capitalism can do for us. During the 1990's American
style capitalism was secretly replaced by corporatism. It's
an open secret of course, but because all the major media
outlets are now owned by corporations, they aren't documenting
the transition. I think corporatism no longer serves humanity
and will be replaced by an ecological or knowledge based economy.
We can see the seeds of the system to come, in examples like
Napster and Open Source Computing. The new system is sustainable
because if I have an idea and I give it to you, then we both
have an idea and there's no loss of value, there's only an
increase. With it's power to foster collaboration and create
community, I think the Internet will be a powerful force in
society, unless corporations continue to erode common citizen's
rights. The way things have been going in the early 21st Century,
now is the best time to incorporate and stake out a niche
market. At best it will allow us to maximize the special privileges
reserved for corporate citizens and at worst, it will set
us up for a liquidity event as we become a take-over target.
