Race To Remember 9-11

Matt was a volunteer at this year's Run To Remember. It's an annual 5k & 10k race to memorialize those lost on 9-11. Team Bingham was there, raising money for the scholarships in Mark's name.

2005 9-11 Weekend

My pal Matt came back to SF for several 9-11 related events. We first met in New Orleans so not only do we have a 9-11 connection, we also have a New Orleans connection. That city's recent devestation and the fact that I have friends and acquaintences still missing would have been difficult to bear alone and I'm so grateful that I could take my mind off of things and hang out with Matt around town.

Matt noticed some banners near his hotel advertising an exhibit at the Academy of Art that showcases student submissions to the Flight 93 Heroic Monument Contest. We decided to check it out and had a wander round the gallery.

SF Academy of Art Student and his work

A Student Explains it All

We were a little confused when we first walked in because the work was displayed as the other art in the gallery instead of showing the connections between the work. I heard a guy talking to some people and flagged him down. It turned out that he was one of the students involved in the project being showcased.

I took the above picture of him posing in front of the work he submitted for the contest. All the students involved were flown out to the crash site in Pensylvania. He collaborated with two other students to complete the poster on the right in the photo for submission to the national contest. When they had more time to refine their designs, the students completed a second poster (On the left in the photo above). While none of the Academy of Art student submissions made it to the second round, he said it was an amazing experience and it sounded like a great way to learn about the design/development process.

Discovery Channel Documentary

On Sunday night September 11, the Discovery Channel presented the world premiere of a documentary that chronicles the events of Flight 93 and honors the heros on board who inspired a nation. Matt hired out a suite in the Marriott and a group of us watched the show together. It was such a bittersweet experience and I was so grateful to go through it with people missing Mark as much and more than I was.
