Back Again

One highlight of the day was seeing Neon Leon in the DJ booth on the Fag Friday's Dance Stage. He was a San Francisco DJ for years and a staple of these types of events before he moved to Germany. It's been far too long since I've danced to one of his sets and the minute I heard Sweet Pussy Pauline's voice thundering across the dance area, I knew the Neon Leon was on the dex. Dancing in the sunshine is still so much fun, especially with old friends at the helm.

Food Fun

One highlight in the hunt for food this year was reading all of the humourous signs begging for tips. Two of the best were: "You have my sausage in your mouth, the least you can do is tip me!!!" and "Tips, tits or ass... show me something!"

Thank goodness for Lydia's Raw Living Food booth! I ate there twice and I have to say it was hyper delicious!

Pride™ Festival

My experiences this year were mostly made up of vignettes with different people and places around the large Civic Center area. I never made it up to the Black stage or the Latino stage or the faery village, they were too far out of the way for me. By the end of the day, I realized I only got to the women's stage, main stage and dance area... but that was still enough to have a really great time.

Finding Friends in the Crowd

The best part of this type of event is running into friends old and new. I took a few pictures of some of the people I saw and hung out with. Obviously people like Tom Teare will wonder why his picture isn't featured, but he was drinking with his friends and then his mobile phone rang and when you have to move on, it's time to go. While it's not an exhaustive list, at least it's a start...

Not much official "entertainment"

For some reason there was no real headliner on the main stage this year. Oh sure, they had Jennifer Holiday up there and some people pretended that she was socially relevant enough to headline this type of event. The only mainstage act I cared enough about to actually wander over and check out was Clymaxx. They were great. They did "Meetin' in the Lady's Room" and "The Men All Pause" plus a few old disco covers and a rock and roll number with a heavy guitar solo.

The Fag Friday's Dance Stage had a great line-up of DJs plus Thea Austin. She's probably best known for her vocals on "Rhythm Is A Dancer". She stunned the crowd by taking the stage with a bright pink guitar and doing a mostly accapella version of the song. Then she busts out with a few bars of Santana's "Oye Como Va". She played it on the guitar as she changed the words back to "Rhythm Is A Dancer". The crowd was right up for it and she was amazing. When she finished the song, dancers appeared and she put down her guitar and the backing tape started up. She completed the rest of her set with a traditional live PA over DAT, but she proved herself to be a diversely talented vocalist and performer.

The ever glamourous Juanita Moore got far too little stage time as she dressed up her 'Moore Boys' like clowns:

Fabulous Fashions

I didn't pay much attention to the fashions this year... or maybe there wasn't enough to catch my eye. While last year's obsession with the colour pink seems to have been a flash in the pan, there were several people going retro while working the rainbow theme to the extreme...
