Roaming
The Show
There were only six guys in our group, all over 6ft4 except
for Irwin who, at 6ft1 became our token short guy. At times
it was like herding cats with everyone so excited to explore.
There were so many cars to check out and too few knowlegable
sales people to assist us, but we did manage to stick together
more or less and check out quite a few vehicles.
It could have been quite a depressing experience for me.
I tried out over 50 vehicles and only really felt comfortable
in one, The Mercedes G-Class. Since it cost about $60,000
more than I'd like to spend, I was glad to have other people
around me having a similar experience. The boxy silhouette
of the G-500 is similar to the Honda Element and I was hoping
to fit in that just as easily. Because the windshield doesn't
have the sloping issues that alot of SUVs have, the Element
seemed like a logical choice. Unfortunately, for a vehicle
with 65 seating configurations, it didn't have the one I needed
most. If I could just move the driver's seat back about an
inch and a half, it would definately be an affordable version
of the G-500.
I did find the Nissan Murano which has a lot of promise,
but I'll have to go to a dealership to check one out that
has manual seat adjustments and no sun roof because the motors
for both take up alot of room.
I was surprised at how many tall guys I saw wandering around
in the crowd. I know San Francisco is a smaller market, but
the first hour we were there, I must have seen or talked to
about twenty guys 6ft4 and over. While the population in San
Francisco is generally slimmer than the national average,
I did notice quite a few fat people in the crowds. When will
the auto industry get real about American consumers and increase
the options for bigger drivers?
