I was really bummed when the director got on stage and announced that this was its theatrical debut and that its available in the "extras" section of the DVD of Hedwig. I wasn't bummed because it was bad or anything, I just could have saved some money and watched it more comfortably at home. There was nothing visually stunning in the feature to warrant a need to see it on a full screen, but it was insightful and informative. This documentary provides a wonderful examination into the creative process of the original creators of Hedwig, John Cameron Mitchel and Stephen Trask. I particularly enjoyed how it basically mapped out the distinct elements that separate the character development of Hedwig from that of the ordinary drag personas of her initial milieu. Even in her more tragic and bitter aspects, Hedwig always exhibits a poignancy that transforms her anger into a bittersweet celebration of survival. This documentary does an excellent job of showing how her creator did the same thing to create and escape her. |
