2002 Events: Queer Film Festival

Ke Kulana He Mahu
Remembering a Sense of Place

This feature was more video than film and provided a documentary look into the long history of same sex love in Hawaii. I like the mix of ancient history and recent history provided by acedemics and historians juxtaposed with the more immediate and personalized modern histories provided by the transgendered, Modern Mahu.

It was very interesting to learn about the various types of relationships that traditional Hawaiian society fostered, though it was sad to hear about the decimating effects of colonization and churchianity when foreigners imposed their binary existance on the multi-faceted natives.

There was a panel discussion with one of the filmakers and several of the subjects she interviewed. They basically re-iterated the points they made in the film and I wish they gave more time to Q&A, but that's part of the film festival experience.
