This film is a mock-u-mentary about group therapy and it had a unique approach to a quirky subject. Unfortunately, the execution of their ideas was a bit spotty. The group portions of the film were presented in a split screen format with six different views at all times. The editing of these portions were very well done in spots, especially early in the film when one lady is seen in several squares talking over herself. The effect gave insight into the character's inner world and I wonder why the filmakers gave up on that objective with their outdoor scenes. They obviously needed a distancing device from the immediacy of the group scenes, but they squandered the opportunity to give an alternate angle on character development by wasting their effort depicting lame outdoor scenes, like a girl in some wheat made of metal or another one who dresses in a "Goth" style out in a graveyard. The end of the film is quite a let down as the film makers try to depict each character's "transformation" (or lack thereof) presumably because of the group therapy, but because of its execution it obviously had more to do with the wardrobe staff. Case in point, a rather plain looking girl gets more dark in her make-up and outfits and becomes a total Goth chick. Then in the final scenes of the film, she appears in total heavy metal attire. I found myself asking my pal Eddie who she was because she looked so different. All
in all, a really great student film or freshman effort and I'm sure its
cutting edge narritive style could spark a lot of great debates in a film
school context, but I think the general public should pass on this one
unless you're a lesbian and you think one of the all female cast is hot. |
