2002 Events: Queer Film Festival

Foreign Tongues

This was a collection of short films centered around the theme of being "straight".

Like any presentation of shorts, some are great and some are bad with most being ok and this was no exception.

I particularly enjoyed the Brazilian short called, "The Adventures of the Super Powerful". It featured two super-heros running around in leotards, spiked heeled shoes and satin capes. Their decidedly unfabulous activities provided a fun and funny counterpoint to the naration.

Another good one was an Italian short called, Butterfly. It proved that the pitfalls of gay dating in a homophobic society are fairly universal.

The best technical execution goes to another French short entitled, "Erè Mèla Mèla". This short, featured a brilliant soundtrack and was more of a long music video than anything else. It depicted two guys physically dancing together and electronically dancing together at the same time. Some of the camera tricks were used to great effect in the 80s by Peter Gabriel, but here they had a more prominent role because the music had no lyrics and the audience was left to infer a meaning with the subjects alone.

The best story and acting belonged to a French short called, "Final Exams". It profiled three very different classmates on the last day of school. The water ballet and musical numbers were seamlessly integrated into the storyline and felt natural in the dream sequence way they were portrayed.
