San Francisco Pride™

The 2002 SF "Pride" festival is June 29th and 30th. Check back in early July and I'll have this page completed.

Originally called "Gay Freedom Day" this Queer holiday was co-opted by the commercial elements of the "community" and de-volved into "Pride". Even the "Freedom Flags" are now called "Rainbow Pride Flags."

It happened in the African American community when Hip Hop got turned into the commodity called "Rap". Maybe it's inevitable, I'd like to believe it's not.

I find it especially disheartening when bar friends and acquaintances greet me with "Happy Pride" as if one of the deadly sins has suddenly become a noun that one should be happy about.

I don't drink alcohol and seldom go to the Castro District (aka "the Gay Ghetto") so I participate in Pride activities because it's become one of the only ways I can connect with the larger "community".

An Entertaining Event

They just announced the Main Stage "entertainment" Dead or Alive will basically be Pete Burns doing a live PA over a DAT tape. I saw him do it at a club I DJed in London a few years ago... Marc Almond should be good and I know the V-Ness posse is ecstatic to see him...

I love running into friends old and new at these large scale events. When I get some pix of the lot, they'll be posted here...

The Freedom Day Parade

The parade is like four hours long and televised. Don't know how much of it I'll get to see, but I'll post the pix when I get them...

This year's theme is
"Be Yourself, Change the world"

It's so difficult for most people to be themselves these days. That's why drugs and W's are so popular.

Last year's theme was
"Queerific"

Queer Freedom Day
offers a chance to remember those that died without the freedom to love one another or to just be themselves in peace.
