I
went to Marin again this year to spend
Christmas with the Foxglüv
kids. They spent most of Christmas day driving across California, so I
didn't actually go to Marin until Boxing Day. Once we settled in with
a nice fire and some music, we created a hearty vegan feast. A surprise
visit by R.C.Sharon turned into a slumba-party in preparation for the
prezzie-party in the morning... Last
year, we had vegan muffins in the garden for Brunch on Christmas, how
California is that? This year, the weather kept us inside, but as you
can see from these photos, we still had a great time... Ghost of Christmas past The next time you find yourself in a store, getting annoyed at incessant repetitions of "the Carol of the Bells," consider this: it's a remnant of the pre-Christian winter solstice celebration in the Ukraine. The Ukrainian carol called "Shchedryk" has the same melody as the Carol of the Bells, but different English words. The word "Shchedryk" means the "Generous One". It refers to the god of generosity, the Dazh Boh - the Giver God, which is the sun. The song was easily converted to a Christian meaning with the implication of Santa as the great giver. |
