2001 Events: Southern Decadence

Mark Bingham and fundie protesters at Southern DecadenceProponents of Churchianity still oppose homosexuality, freedom of self-expression and joy

This contingent marched through the "Fruit Loop" of Saint Anne Street and Bourbon Street and then posted themselves, "safely" but visibly in the straight section of Bourbon Street to mock the revelers of Southern Decadence. The fact that Jesus NEVER TAUGHT THEOLOGY and there is absolutely no system of theology of doctrine to be found in the Christian bible hasn't stopped these folks from twisting things to their own purposes. Because we live in a country that pretends to be a free and democratic one, I let them have their somber, judgmental display.

Hindu Fundamentalists dance in New OrleansHindu fundamentalists still oppose homosexuality, but they've got the joy thing down pat

What a surprising contrast to find another group of fundamentalists from the opposite end of the spectrum. They also have a "one true way" doctrine and a literalist interpretation of scripture, but their marketing team is far more advanced. Maybe worshiping a musician helps too. I mean any guy that can shag 1,000 cow herding Gopi girls SIMULTANEOUSLY can't hate homos as much as the Hare Krishna's claim. This faith filled bunch was laughing, dancing and singing down Bourbon Street. They make the whole God thing a lot more appealing than their banner waving, vitriolic cousins down the street. I don't know if they read that line in the Christian bible about making a joyful noise for the Lord, but it sure looked like it to me. They saved my pals Holly and Boy George from heroin and they host free weekly vegetarian feasts every week all over the planet. As fundamentalists go, these kids know how to party!...

One of the good things about living in the U.S. is the constitutional right to have a different opinion.

I respect other people's right to have their own views about God and Life, I just wish they respected my rights as much
