2001 Events: Flag Day

FPSI crew ready for the gameTake us out to the ballgame

To celebrate, my boss at the day job decided to take us all to a day game at the ball park. It's one of the perks of working for a micro sized company. It's supposed to be one of the hottest days of the year so far and it sure felt like it!

We sat up in the nose bleed section, but we had a great view of the whole field, and the bay. The hipsters behind us kept talking about fishing trips and funny stories about what their mutual friends (co-workers?) did while drunk last weekend... They sounded like recently laid off dot-commers and they left in the fifth inning.

So it was kind of hazy still when I took this shot, but it cleared up and we could see Oakland and the East Bay quite clearly. The giant Coke bottle kind of freaked me out. It has "bubbles" coming out of the top of it and I think it's like a slide or something in it for kids to play in.

It ended early

They finished the game before the end of the ninth inning because the Giants were already ahead and didn't feel like rubbing it in. Then they all congratulated themselves on the field... the Angels just hit the showers and didn't thank the Giants for not rubbing it in.

Apres Game RhetoricIntegrity Gap

I was shocked to discover that so few of the "Home" team actually live in San Francisco. I think they're the only ones that can afford to buy a home here these days, but they choose to live elsewhere and just stay in a hotel during the season, even at "Home" games. I was told they get traded a lot and these days it's more like doing a job than ever before. They don't actually have to drink alcohol even though Budweiser pays their bills. There were 40,000 people at the game. None had even half the passion of a European Football match. Maybe that would change if the team actually lived here and was more visible and connected to the community.

It was actually pretty fun. I brought a magazine thinking I'd be bored, but I never opened it once! For some reason I thought baseball was more like cricket. I brought a jacket thinking the game would go on all night, but it only lasted a little over two hours.

If the out of work Dot-Com kids behind us had stayed around, the Monster.com blimp might have been more effective.
