Due Out Soon

There's a short story recounting some of my early 90s rave antics that is written by my pal Andee. She's read excerpts of it at the Bored Collective club nights at 26 Mix in San Francisco. It may be published in an anthology soon. When I know more, you'll know more.

Out of Print

There's a book about 'cyber' culture called "Cyberia: Life in the Trenches of Hyperspace" by Douglass Rushkoff.
I think it's out of print now, but there's a huge section on Toon Town. It's full of
mis-quotes and inacuracies, but he revisited the subject in a fictional account of Toon Town in his more recent book:

Ecstasy Club

The character of Duncan is a thinly disguised version of Mark Heley, but can you guess which character is based on me?

Media Whore or Media Bore?

I hope this section doesn't lead down a slippery slope to behaving like Angeline. She's that phone sex lady in Los Angeles that has a HUGE billboard over the Sunset Strip with her face and phone sex number on it. She can often be seen driving back and forth in front of the billboard basking in her supposed fame. Some people have been curious if I'm the same guy they've heard about, so I thought I would throw this list up. I'm not ashamed of my wild, raving past, it's just not really part of my life now.

Fairly Recent Items:

In the Autumn of 2000, the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) did a series called "Global Club Culture" and devoted an episode to San Francisco. They interviewed me and NONE of my British friends taped it for me!

In 1999, the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) produced a documentary called "Rebels of the Underground" it features two songs by FOXGLUV as well as footage of the band and an interview with vocalist, Urth Gurl.

construction coneI Used to be World Famous

According to some reports, I'm one of the first queer ravers in America and was instrumental in bringing acid house, rave and the global club culture to America. I was involved in the production of such seminal SF events as the first rave in SF: Recess; as well as Toon Town, Wicked and the Full Moon Massive (AKA: Full Moon Raves) A lot of the straight media in the U.S. erased the gay elements. Most of the gay media were totally clueless or ignored the phenomenon until the white, middle class, muscle queens got into it and organised the first all-gay raves, known as Circuit Parties. It was hard finding material from this stage of my life. I really like the photo of Bald Gina and I on the cover of the SF Bay Guardian from 91 or 92, so if I can find a copy and scan it, I'll post it. Until then, these will have to suffice:

construction conei-D Magazine

The July 1992, Issue (#106) of London's i-D Magazine had a cover story featuring the San Francisco Rave Scene. Toon Town and Carefree were both profiled and I was interviewed extensively.

construction coneSF Sentinel

The 16 April 1992 issue of The San Francisco Sentinel Newsweekly. Toon Town was profiled with a ton of photos (including this one of me) in their "Hot Shots in Cool Spots" column. This paper went out of business in the mid-90s, some say it was another casualty of the AIDS crisis, but I think San Francisco can't support more than one weekly gay newspaper.

construction coneSF Examiner

The San Francisco Examiner's Sunday Magazine ran a cover story called "Mutant Youth -Inside SF's New Rave Underground" by Cynthia Robins on February 16, 1992. It profiled many of the early SF events, especially Toon Town. They had several photos of me in the brain-machine demo area and dancing, of course.
